While attending yesterday's rally, I have nothing but praise for the many participants of the historical event, and as a blind individual I really wish that I could have contributed more such as by marching to the Agong's palace where the memo was handed to the king's officials. Due to the amount of tear-gas that was fired into the crowd near the Sogo MRT station, I found it difficult to continue with the march. The heavy downpour also dampened the spirits of many of the demonstrators including myself, and to make things worse, the heavy handed tactics of the police was quite unnecessary. Once again, I wish to congratulate all Malaysians who took part in the march especially all those who managed to make it to the Agong's palace. All you courageous citizens of Malaysia have certainly created history, and it is my believe that the Barisan government has now more cause to worry as they are certainly aware of the discontentment that their subjects have towards them. So my dear friends, stand up for your rights, and come the forthcoming general elections. Remember to vote out this very oppressive, corrupt and discriminatory government for I strongly feel that we have been persecuted and side-lined long enough.

Malaysians hold huge rally for free elections

Today I had my first experience of having been attacked with teargas and believe you me, it was no fun. The burning sensation in my nostrils is something I will never forget for a long time. I get the impression that the heavy downpour was engineered by the ruling clique, either by conducting cloud-seeding, or by making use of the services of a bomoh. All in all, being at the rally was certainly an unpleasant experience, no thanks to the brutality of the police. Of course, the very inhuman Barisan government has to take full responsibility for what took place this afternoon. When the shouts rang out at the rally, I really felt proud for these very courageous Malaysians who made it a point to come out and show their contempt for this very tyrannical government. Although I did not make it to the palace, I wish to congratulate all those of you who did, for history will remember you for your bravery and great sacrifices.

Finally, I am indeed puzzled as to how Khairy Jamaludin can wield so much power just because he is the son-in-law of the prime minister. Furthermore, he is not even a member of parliament and yet he seems to be running the government together with all his cronies. May I remind the ruling administration that we, right thinking Malaysians are still a force to be reckoned with and will continue the struggle until we vote in a government that does not take its citizens for granted.

Allow rally for electoral reform

Glad to hear that human rights watch is aware of what is going on in Malaysia. I sincerely hope that the international media will be informed about tomorrow's gathering and will send their reporters to cover the event. We law-abiding citizens of Malaysia should not allow ourselves to be intimidated by this tyrannical government in spite of their many threats, but to go ahead with the march as planned.

Finally, Ong Ka Ting of the MCA, you have no business to speak on behalf of the Chinese community, as we do not need traitors such as Chua Soi Lek and yourself to represent us Chinese. Every right thinking Malaysian knows that UMNO is actually running the country and all other Barisan Nasional component parties have no powers whatsoever. All you greedy politicians are taking the opportunity to enrich yourselves at the expense of the Chinese community that you are supposed to serve. It is quite obvious that the MCA will be heavily
defeated during the forthcoming general elections as there is a lot of discontentment amongst Malaysians for the ruling clique which includes you bunch of cowards and hypocrites. Why is Johari sticking his neck out for Mahathir? Does he have an axe to grind? In my opinion, I think that Johari is wasting his time and jeopardizing his position in UMNO, for it is my belief that both Mahathir and Badawi have both already buried the hatchet and have decided to share the spoils together with their family members including their many cronies. The UMNO general assembly is held every year to serve as a reminder to all Malaysians of other races not to question the rights of the malays and to extend the period of the new economic policy, for although if my memory serves me correct, it has already gone on for more than 30 years now. I wish to take to task the comments made by Chua Soi Lek of the MCA for defending Hishamudin's vile act of waving the keris year in and year out. This MCA official is most certainly a traitor to all Malaysians of Chinese descent and a disgrace to his race. One of the UMNO delegates going by the name of Ismail Ahmad even had the audacity of trying to chase Malaysians out of the country especially those who are aligned to the opposition parties. What right has he got to make such a statement, for we have just as much right as he has to be living in this country. All in all, I strongly believe that the annual UMNO general assembly is a recipe for disaster, but fortunately, most Malaysians of other races are peace loving by nature and would rather suffer in silence in spite of the apartheid policies practiced by the ruling clique. Let us all right thinking citizens of Malaysia come out in full force, come the 10th of November to participate in the march to the Agong's palace to demand for a clean and fair election, and remember folks, to cast your precious votes for the opposition during the forthcoming general elections, for a change of government is what we desperately need.

Umno Assembly opens as public disquiet mounts

UMNO has inherited the magic lamp from Aladdin. That's why they are guarding it so jealously for fear of losing their grip on power, and their so called rights and privileges at the expense of all the other citizens of Malaysia. To put it bluntly, apartheid is very much alive and well in Malaysia, whether you like to admit it or not. As usual that racist UMNO minister, Hishamudin has been waving his magic keris again and at the same time spewing his venom by threatening Malaysians of other races. I would compare the UMNO general assembly to a circus of horrors, as UMNO delegates always try to trample on the rights of non-bumiputra Malaysians. This is certainly a sad state of affairs and if all Malaysians are to be given equal treatment, then let us all rise up to effect change come Saturday the 10th of November at the appointed time and place and proudly march to the king's palace. My dear friends please come out in full force for we must send a clear message to the Barisan government that enough is enough and that we will certainly stand up to their despotic rule.

Alfred Ho is leading the way for the blind. Accompanying himself on the guitar, Alfred sings popular Cantonese numbers, theme songs from Hongkong, television serials and evergreen English hits.

Alfred left his job as a telephone operator with the Penang City Council to venture full-time into music. "I hope to pave the way for other blind people. I feel the blind should not be confined to jobs like basket-weaving, telephone operating or stenographing. I'm sure they can do other things. They should try other fields and exploit their talents. I may not succeed but I'm willing to try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained," he says.

Alfred took up music because life was boring. "After being trained at the Gurney Training Centre, I had to wait years for a job. In the meantime, I took up music, learning the guitar from a friend. I wrote songs and learnt country and western tunes," he says.

"I had been contemplating singing full-time for quite a while. I figured that if I wanted to do something, I must go all the way wholeheartedly. I was working in the day and singing at night. It was exhausting and I had little time to spare. Music is in my blood. It is a form of release. It is challenging and I get to meet lots of people. Since I have a talent, I might as well use it," he says.

Alfred learns his songs note by note from listening to tapes. He doesn't read music, although he knows Braille, which he learnt at the St Nicholas School for The Blind in Penang. "Music is more rewarding income-wise too. It is risky but any business venture is a risk. Like any artiste, I hope to make it big".

Alfred has a wide repertoire of songs. He sings in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Malay. He is familiar with Rock and Roll, Disco, Sam Hui's and The Wynners canto-rock songs and Elvis Presley hits. He plays the guitar with very aggressive rhythmic strumming and plays lead in a very country manner. His singing is mellow and most times, he imitates the style and 'slang' of the original singers.

Badruddin refuses to retract remark

So, Badruddin, one of the 3 clowns is at it again. From my observations, having heard a few parliamentary debates myself, I sense that the parliamentary speakers are rather biased towards the opposition. This is certainly a sad state of affairs. whenever insults are thrown at the opposition, the barisan MPs are only given a slap on the wrist, while the speakers of parliament would order the aggrieved party to sit down and at the same time, have their microphones switched off. May I therefore suggest to the members of the opposition to carry megaphones into parliament so that when the speaker switches-off the microphones of the opposition members of the house, then they should shout into their megaphones in order to be heard.

Speaking as a member of the disabled community, I wish to condemn in the strongest terms the uncultured behaviour of some of the very arrogant barisan MPs. It is no wonder that the government has decided not to telecast or broadcast parliamentary proceedings or more recently even the UMNO general assembly for they know fully well that it will incur the wrath of the public. Throwing insults at opposition MPs by Barisan MPs seems to be a great past time for these uncultured beings for they jolly well know that they are untouchable and that no action can and will be taken against them. If this trend is allowed to continue, then I fear that violence might just erupt one of these days for even restraint has its limits. Fortunately members of the opposition are able to control their emotions to a certain extent. Sometimes when I listen to parliamentary debates, I get the feeling that I am at a circus, what with all the shouting going on.

Finally, may I remind all right thinking citizens of Malaysia to vote out the Barisan Nasional government for it has overstayed its welcome. Let us give our undivided support to the opposition with the hope that apartheid and corruption will be things of the past. Please remember to come out in full force on November 10th at Dataran Merdeka, the time being 3pm, at a rally that is being organized by the elections watchdog to try and bring about a clean and fair election.

ALFRED - HOPING FOR A COMEBACK

Remember Alfred Ho, the local crooner who burst into the pop scene with his own composition "TRAIN TO TENNESSEE" in the early 70's? For those unfamiliar with Alfred, he shares a common fate with renowned singers like Jose Feliciano, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. He's blind.

Now, Alfred has turned solo as a guitarist cum singer. Numbers like Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" are his favourites. He lures the audience to sing along with him by talking to them. Yes, he talks and encourages them till they join him in the singing.

Alfred was blinded at three after he suffered an attack of measles. Living in a remote village in Perak, his parents were ignorant about the disease and did not take prompt action which resulted in his blindness. At six, he was admitted to the St. Nicholas School for the Blind in Penang, where the stayed until he passed his LCE in 1966. After that he was trained as a telephone operator and because of his handicap, it took him years to get a job.

It was during his jobless years that he took up singing in an attempt to break the boredom. "It was a frustrating period in my life and I just had to do something to occupy myself and pass the time," recalled Alfred. "My love for music grew and I wrote in to Rediffusion for an audition. It was successful and I took part in a few variety shows organised by them," he said.

Then came his Bakat TV appearance where he qualified for the semi-finals. Alfred also participated in a few TV musicals such as, "Bintang Baru" and once appeared on "Andre Goh's Show". The fact that he tries his best to please the audience in his special way makes him very popular. "

Being blind is not the end of the world. "In fact, we should try harder to discover our inner qualities," he said. When asked whether he has any difficulty in travelling, Alfred said that the problem arises only in unfamiliar surroundings.

Face To Face - Marina Mahathir

I sent an email to Marina urging her to impress upon her father to right the many wrongs to his fellow citizens but alas, she chose to reject my email. The almighty may have given Mahathir a new lease of life so that he can have the opportunity of repenting his crimes towards society, make reparations to Malaysians wherever possible and probably even shed light on the now infamous Lingamgate saga. If Marina is really for justice, then why does she not use some of her family fortune to help the many people that her father has persecuted during his 22 years in power. I get the impression that both Mahathir and Badawi have now mended fences and may have even decided to share the spoils together. It is really ironical that whilst Mahathir was against homosexuality, Marina headed the pink triangle organization. How was that possible, I wonder.

Finally, Mahathir, if you are reading this blog, may I strongly urge you to take full advantage of the new lease of life that the almighty has granted you, by repenting of your past misdeeds and at the same time exposing all your corrupt ministers and their wrong-doings. Please also shed light on the Lingamgate saga if you are involved in this conspiracy for it has already gone on long enough and furthermore, the lives of some brave and innocent people might be ruined. As the saying goes, God has a purpose for everything, and I believe that your recovery is part of his plan.

The demands made by the ACA to Anwar and the PKR is most disgraceful and deplorable. I strongly urge Anwar and his party to stand their ground and not give in to demands of the ACA to surrender the now infamous Lingam video tape. Instead of investigating the culprits, the ACA has decided to intimidate the whistle blowers and this is really uncalled for.

How much longer is the government going to take us Malaysians for fools? To show the ruling administration that enough is enough, let us all right thinking citizens of Malaysia come out in full force on the 10th of November to stand for our rights by supporting the elections watchdog to fight for a clean and fair election. Malik Hussein And Independence of Judiciary

Mahathir the mastermind, Rahim Noor the boxing clown, Borhan the arresting officer together with his band of torturers should be made to cough out the hefty sum awarded by the high court to Malik. Did I hear some of you answer, correct, correct, correct? Personally, I strongly feel that public funds should not be used to pay out the compensation as quite a sizable amount of money is involved.

By the way, I wrote an email to Marina Mahathir, urging her to impress upon her father, when he has fully recovered, to right the many wrongs towards his fellow citizens, but to my disappointment, she chose not to entertain my email. It is my prediction that Malik will not live to see a cent of his compensation awarded by the high court, as I strongly believe that the ruling administration will certainly appeal the judgement. Furthermore, I think that this is just another election ploy by the Barisan Nasional government to garner more votes. However, if my prediction is incorrect and Malik gets his well deserved reward, then it would be nice if he could use part of the money to help the down-trodden and all those people who have been oppressed by this very despotic government.

ACA orders Anwar to hand over original video clip

I strongly urge Anwar and his party to stand their ground and not be intimidated by the ACA and the ruling administration. However, I read somewhere that the government is enlisting Hong Kong's ICAC to assist in the investigation of the Lingam tape saga. If this is true, then there might yet be a light at the end of the tunnel. I am quite sure that it is every right thinking Malaysian's wish to have this case brought to a just conclusion, and to have the culprits face the full force of the law.

An Incident With TV9

Dear Readers,

I wish to share an incident with you with regards to the TV9 management and you decide as to who is telling the truth.

Recently, TV9 invited me to participate in a reality TV show to highlight the talents of the disabled community where some recordings have already been made for the programme through my participation. However, when the TV authorities visited my blog and found out that I am critical of the government, I was unceremoniously dropped from the show. When I brought this matter to the attention of Malaysiakini, their investigative reporter was told by the TV 9 authorities that the programme was only meant to highlight the talents of Muslim handicapped people. It is quite obvious that I was dropped from the programme because of my political views, and not for the lame excuse which they gave to Malaysiakini. Unfortunately, Malaysiakini took their explanation for the gospel truth, and as such, has decided not to follow up with the matter. As we all know, all the TV stations in Malaysia are controlled and owned by the government and their cronies. I have come to the conclusion that the TV 9 management has dropped me from the show because of my dissenting views towards the government. This is certainly laughable, don't you think?

Nazri the Nazi is trying to be an apple polisher and power broker. As a lawyer, he has brought shame upon himself with the number of blunders that he has made recently. Is he trying to intimidate the Agong, in order to please Badawi so that he can get another promotion? I think that in future, Nazri should check his facts first before giving his interpretations of the law. He is certainly a liability to the cabinet and to the public at large. Come to think of it, he should be charged for challenging the powers of the Agong and for being disrespectful.

Chan Kong Choy as Minister of Transport should be relieved of his post with immediate effect to take responsibility for at least 2 major disasters that have taken place in the last few months, not forgetting a huge scandal which surfaced recently. Some months ago, a horrific bus crash took place near Taiping where at least 20 passengers lost their lives and many more were critically injured. What's more, the bus driver was high on drugs, and to top it all, his driving license had already expired. At the same time, several warrants of arrest were served on the bus driver concerned, but yet he was allowed to drive the ill fated bus. Unfortunately, the bus driver also succumbed to his injuries during the horrific accident. It was also reported that the bus company had even accumulated many summonses from the JPJ, but yet it was business as usual for the bus company thus causing the unnecessary loss of lives. Then more recently, a ferry that was not seaworthy and whose license had expired caught fire during its journey resulting in at least half a dozen fatalities and several more being injured. It was also discovered that the license of the ferry concerned had expired since December 2006. Reports were also abound that during the hari raya period, a Palestinian managed to hide in the wheel compartment of a Singapore bound plane parked at the KLIA but who was arrested when the plane landed in Singapore.

Finally, the ministry was also embroiled in a huge scandal known as the PKFZ fiasco where a company had to be bailed out by the government to the tune of almost 5 billion dollars. To avoid answering questions from the press as he was implicated in the matter, Chan Kong Choy took the easy way out by feigning illness and subsequently took leave to go to Australia supposedly for a medical checkup. It is quite normal for Barisan government ministers such as Chan Kong Choy to shirk their responsibilities and put the blame on their subordinates instead. As such, like all right thinking Malaysians, I strongly feel that this very irresponsible transport minister should be taken to task and that even legal action be taken against him for the many disasters and scandals that have taken place all this while.

However, we all know that this will just be wishful thinking, and before too long, everything will be forgotten. As such, my dear friends, let us wake up to reality and cast our precious votes for the opposition, for we need to vote in a government which will treat all its citizens equally, and where discrimination and corrupt practices will be things of the past.

The House That Zak Built

No wonder Zam has told the press that Badawi is not interested in hearing the truth, except from government officials. The charitable institutions should not have sent their inmates to attend Zakariah's dinner. No amount of good that he is trying to do now can save him from the punishment that he deserves in the hereafter. As stated in the article, Zakariah's palacial mansion sticks out like a sore thumb in a squatter area. Why has this crook not been punished for building such a huge mansion, the money which he would have got through dubious means, whilst other people who have committed lesser crimes have had harsh punishments meted out to them. Time and time again, the ruling administration has been testing our patience, and I think that the time has now come for us to say that enough is enough, so the only way to go is to vote in the opposition to show the Barisan government that we will no longer stand for their corrupt and evil ways.

By the way, who gave Ng Yen Yen the authority not to allow little dragon ladies from China to work as maids in Malaysia. Did she seek the views of all Malaysians before making her petition to the government with regards to this matter? Anyway, this is just a very small concession made by the government just to please the MCA. However, I wish to challenge the MCA or any other component party within the Barisan government to influence their political masters to
treat all Malaysian citizens equally and to consider all Malaysians as bumiputras regardless of race or creed. If the component parties within the ruling administration can achieve this, then my dear friends, by all means vote in the Barisan government in the forthcoming general elections again. However, I am absolutely sure that the MCA will not be able to change the status quo. So once again, my dear Malaysians, may I remind you to use your votes wisely by voting in the opposition for it's time that we voted in a clean, efficient and trustworthy government.

A visually-impaired person does not necessarily mean one is less concerned about the politics and society of his homeland, Malaysia. Mr. Alfred Ho (thereupon referred to as Alfred) is an avid and seasoned reader of political affairs particularly through the internet, traversing through multiple blogs and famous news sites such as The Star, Malaysia Today and Malaysiakini ( http://www.malaysiakini.com/ ).

It seems that Ms. Teresa came to know him because he lives in her constituency. Having some problems with his daily life due to some purported discrimination because of his disability, he seek for her help by sending e-mails with related content.

Previously, Alfred stated that he had tried to approach various governmental organisations and parties for assistance but was not able to get the help that he wanted. Only Ms. Teresa took the initiative to meet with him and approach in a positive manner. This is what prompted Alfred to commit himself to DAP to further his causes.

Besides that, Alfred had also allegedthat he is also being discriminated for his political standing, as can be seen from the published letters in his blog.

On matters of national interest, he mentioned his opinion that the Angkasawan project is a waste of public funds that could be better used to serve the poor citizens. Alfred is deeply concerned with the current state of corruption in the nation.

It seems that Malaysians are not concerned enough because "they still have money to spend" but judging by the current state of corruption, he calls for all to react before "it is too late". He strives for equality for all, regardless of race and religion. He reiterated that there should be no discrimination even to those disabled.

Alfred uses a Speech Recognition software. It is an incredible tool that allows them to navigate softwares effectively. Words displayed on websites can be translated and transmitted as audio. As for using the keyboard, Alfred was trained in typing. Being quite a fast typist, writing e-mails or commenting in forums is not a problem for him.

After Mr. Fong Kui Lun welcomed Alfred into the party, Tan Kok Wai urged the nation to use voting as a way to improve the situation in Malaysia. As someone used to say "These days corruption is no longer under the table, it is on the table".

The MP mentioned about Singapore Minister Mentor, Lee Kuan Yew's statement on the potential that Singapore may rejoin Malaysia if equality is practised. He seconded it and re-emphasised the concept with education.

Lee Kuan Yew is more than qualified to put forth his views with regards to Malaysia. Granted, that his government is a little authoritarian, but at least, all Singaporeans are treated equally, and the needs of his citizens are all well taken care of. It is no exaggeration when I say that none of the Barisan politicians can match the intelligence of Lee Kuan Yew. May I suggest to the man with 2 Mohammads in his name to retire and stop making uncalled-for statements. Same old song, the spin doctors are at it again. Everything in that report sounds too far-fetched. Believe it or not, I have attended Badawi's first hari raya gathering with the purpose of handing him a letter requesting his intervention in a dispute that I was having with RTM. Unfortunately, nothing came out of it as he decided to ignore my letter altogether till this very day. Anyway, coming back to the food. There was nothing to shout about, for if I remember correctly, the beef rendang was so tough that it was no fun eating it.. the cakes that was served was not fresh, and in short, if I had to pay for the food, I would have regretted it. I am in total agreement with you that having 200 thousand people to attend Badawi's function is certainly an exaggeration, and for the reasons which you have given in your article, it is just cheap publicity and wishful-thinking on the part of the organizers of the function. As usual a very splendid article. You certainly did not pull any punches with your frank views and most of all, you were rather witty in that interview. RPK, your reasoning that the opposition should boycott the elections does make a lot of sense, but however, I strongly feel that we need an opposition to speak out about the injustices that is happening all too frequently these days. For your information, I am proud to announce that I will be joining the ranks of the opposition by becoming a member of the democratic action party this coming Sunday, the 14th of this month at Teresa Kok's service centre. At least, I now have another platform to air my grievances against this very dictatorial government, and even get the opportunity to inform Malaysian voters of their rights to vote in a new government. Although you rightly said, for the opposition to win the forthcoming elections is quite impossible with the odds stacked against them, but however, we should not give up hope as we must not give up without a fight. Recently, i wrote to Marina Mahathir to ask her to impress upon her father to repent of all his misdeeds, and to shed light on the Lingamgate scandal.Of course, I do not expect to get a reply from her. in my humble opinion, Mahathir will not repent, for I remember reading in the news that he congratulated the Malaysian space tourist who was blasted into space on Wednesday. I believe that sending a Malaysian to space was the brainchild of mahathir, and what's more, about 100 million dollars of the taxpayer's money has been wasted in this stupid project, when these funds could have been better spent to help Malaysians subsidise food prices, gas and petroleum hikes and to provide much better health care, etc. I may sound unpatriotic, but 100 million dollars could certainly be put to better use to give Malaysians a better quality of life. Finally, RPK, like many Malaysia-Today readers, I sincerely hope that you will set up a political party to right the wrongs of this very despotic government for their many crimes seem to go unchecked. Like all other right thinking Malaysians, I wish to register my protest with the barisan government for spending the astronomical sum of 100 million dollars just to send a Malaysian tourist to space. In my opinion, this is absolutely criminal. This huge amount of money could have been better spent by subsidizing food prices, petroleum and toll hikes and providing better health care for all Malaysians. It has come to my attention that this space adventure is the brain-child of ex premier mahathir, and the present administration has chosen to carry out his legacy. To add insult to injury, I believe that the barisan government will be sending another malaysian space tourist into space next year, thus throwing another 100 million dollars of taxpayer's money down the drain. I think that as loyal citizens of the country, we should speak out with regards to the wastage of public funds, and that these funds should be put to better use to benefit us all Malaysians.Anyway, to help bring about a better Malaysia, I will be creating history of sorts by being the first blind individual to join an opposition political party i.e. the democratic action party this coming Sunday, the 14th of this month at the service centre of Teresa Kok, the MP for Seputeh. The Actors Studio Theatre opens at Plaza Putra, Dataran Merdeka with a performance by singer Alfred Ho, who will be accompanied by The Gig Dancers.

Ho, who hails from Perak, has been crooning evergreens in the pub circuit for more than two decades. "I chose evergreens as my signature songs because they appeal to everyone. You'll find even the younger generation listening to oldies because not only are they soothing, they are meaningful as well," he says.

Ho, who became blind after an attack of measles at the age of three, has not let his handicap stand in the way of his aspirations. His passion for music goes back to his days at St. Nicholas School for the blind in Penang, where he learned to play the guitar. Unable to find a teacher to guide him, he decided to play the guitar on his own. He later formed a four-piece band called The Sharks which performed in pubs and at private functions.

After leaving the Gurney Training Centre where he received vocational training, he remained jobless for five years. Choosing not to sit back and depend on others, Ho kept himself busy working on songs which were later featured in his performances.

It was not easy for him to get a break. After years of struggle, he was finally auditioned by a local commercial broadcasting station which gave him the opportunity to do a show called Take Five. Those who heard Ho encouraged him to pursue a career in music.

Ho is thankful to friends and family who have given him support and encouragement which he describes as a boost to his singing career. The encouragement he received led him on to other achievements, among them, the chance to take part in the first series of the RTM singing contest in the early 70s, reaching the semi-finals.

It was also in the 1970s that Ho cut two EPs of his own compositions, including Train To Tennessee and Wendy's Love Song. After securing a full-time job with a local council, Ho continued singing part-time in pubs or entertaining at weddings and other functions. In 1984, he gave up his job as a telephone operator to go full swing into showbiz.

After many years in showbiz, Ho has no regrets. He says entertainment with all it's up and downs can be very fulfilling. Though going into business won't exactly be a breeze, he remains characteristically undeterred.

"I won't give up for as long as I have breath left in my body," he says.

Dear Anil,

Thanks for your unexpected email. If you have visited my blog, then you will know why I have taken an interest in politics. At the same time, I have been greatly influenced by the popular Caribbean singer, Harry Belafonte who has been championing the rights of the coloured people in America, and believe you me he is very vocal in this respect even to the extent of criticizing President Bush. It may interest you to learn that I have applied to join the DAP and that my application has been accepted. As a matter of interest, the party is holding a press conference on Sunday the 14th of this month to publicize this matter. At last, I now have a platform to air my political views and I hope to do my part by campaigning for the party in the forthcoming general elections. It is rather unfortunate that most Malaysians are contented with their lives, and as such are happy to retain the status quo. Dear Anil,

I wish here to relate an incident to you for your amusement. Recently, tv 9 invited me to participate in a reality tv show to highlight the talents of the disabled community where some recordings have already been made for the programme through my participation. However, when the tv authorities visited my blog and found out that I am critical of the government, I was unceremoniously dropped from the show. When I brought this matter to the attention of Malaysiakini, their investigative reporter was told by the tv 9 authorities that the programme was only meant to highlight the talents of muslim handicapped people. It is quite obvious that I was dropped from the programme because of my political views, and not for the lame excuse which they gave to Malaysiakini. Unfortunately, Malaysiakini took their explanation for the gospel truth, and as such, has decided not to follow up with the matter. As we all know, all the tv stations in Malaysia are controlled and owned by the government and their cronies. I have come to the conclusion that the tv 9 management has dropped me from the show because of my dissenting views towards the government. This is certainly laughable, don't you think? HOW ALFRED HO GAUGES MOOD OF HIS AUDIENCE

Blind musician Alfred Ho sees his audience with his mind's eye and the years of entertaining have enabled him to gauge their moods.

Blind since young, Alfred worked as a telephone operator in the Penang Municipal Council before quitting sometime in 1984 to sing full-time.

"When you can see the people's faces, it is much easier to gauge what they want. I have to listen for their applause or go by the night's requests to find out their response. Reading them with my ears isn't difficult really. When I don't hear the response I want, I would switch to other numbers until I hit the right ones."

Although this entertainer's favourites are oldies and country and western, he also sings Spanish, Thai, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Hokkien, Malay and contemporary numbers.

Alfred who likes P. Ramlee's songs and also yodels when he does country and western numbers, says he quit his job for showbiz because of the challenged involved.

Since going professional, Alfred has done stints in pubs, at functions and department stores in Kuala Lumpur and also performed at a leading hotel in Kuala Terengganu.

His most memorable moments in Ipoh have been the shows he did at the Royal Ipoh Club which he said was made possible by the late journalist John Kam, who helped arrange for his performance.

He also credited Royston Goh and Patrick Teoh as being responsible for starting him off on his singing career.

Malaysia Tempts Whistle-Blower With Plastic Surgery

Nazri had his house burgled, and the crime was solved within a week. Why should any Malaysian be ashamed of being a whistle-blower. In fact, his action should be applauded as he would have done a service for the nation. May I even suggest that the whistle-blower be conferred a title such as that of Tan Sri or some higher title. Nazri's statement of offering the whistle-blower a change of identity or plastic surgery is most absurd. Why can't the government grant the whistle-blower 24 hours protection, just as the British author Salman Rushdie was given round the clock protection for about 10 years when a death sentence was imposed on him by certain Muslim clerics. As I have said before, Nazri is certainly a liability to the government and to all Malaysian citizens. As usual, Nazri is talking crap. Why should whistle-blowers change their identities or go for plastic surgery. What an absurd statement. At the end of the day, there will be insufficient evidence against the 3 accused, and that they will go off Scot free. It is no wonder that the public has lost all interest in the case. I think that the perpetrators of this very horrific and inhuman crime will only receive their just desserts in the afterlife. If we allow the judiciary to be manipulated by people in high places, then I fear that justice will be a rare commodity for all law abiding citizens in Malaysia.

We have only 1 option if we want to bring about change, and that is to vote out the present government who have failed us for the best part of 50 years. As you all know, one of the component parties of the Barisan Nasional i.e. the Gerakan held its general assembly just 2 days ago. Koh Tsu Koon and his party members spoke against corruption within the government and pressed the authorities to hold a royal commission with regards to the Lingam tape saga. However, prime minister Badawi appeared to be unperturbed and even avoided questions from the press at the Gerakan assembly. My question to all Gerakan members is this; should your masters within the Barisan decide not to act on your suggestions and complaints, what will be your next course of action. If you are all sincere, and still have principles and decency, then I would strongly urge all of you to leave the government to join the opposition as you would have more dignity in this respect.

It is rather ironical that instead of punishing the culprits, the ACA has decided to punish the PKR duo instead. Although rather remote, should both Lingam and Fairuz be found guilty of manipulating the judiciary, they should be made to share the same prison cell so that they can enjoy each other's company for the rest of their lives.

Like many other ministers, Nazri is a liability to the government. We should not take anymore nonsense from him. I am baffled as to how he got his law degree. He must have bought it with a hefty sum.

By the way, the Barisan government has spoken out against the Burmese government for cracking down on its citizens. Would I then be correct in assuming that the Barisan government is giving us the green light to show our disenchantment by following the example of our Burmese brethren? Believe it or not, toll and transportation charges are going up next year, presumably after the general elections. The political situation in Malaysia is no different than that of Burma. I'm glad to inform you that I've recently purchased some of your earlier albums that have been recently re-released by EMI. The albums include "ME & MY SHADOWS" and "CLIFF 21." Frankly speaking, I prefer listening to your old songs as I can identify with them better. Some of my favourites from your earlier albums include "Y'ARRIVA", "CATCH ME" & "TELL ME." It may interest you to know that I've also got a collection of "THE SHADOWS GREATEST HITS." Unfortunately, I'm unable to obtain a recording of the "QUARTERMASTER'S STORE." Another of your songs which I'm trying to lay my hands on is "THINKING OF OUR LOVE." Please advise me as to how I can obtain the above mentioned recordings.

Time now for me to introduce myself to you. I am a blind individual by the name of Alfred Ho & I'm a singer cum guitarist by profession. I've been greatly influenced by you to take up singing & playing the guitar seriously as a career. I took up singing seriously in the early 70's on a part-time basis whilst working as a telephone operator. Consequently, I gave up my full-time job in the mid-80's to take up singing as a full-time profession. I used to play at dinner engagements, including house parties thrown by expatriates. Some of the expatriates whom I've played for include CEOs of Standard Chartered Bank, Malaysian Tobacco Company, Nestle and Alfred Dunhill of London. I also used to do stints in pubs & restaurants. I've also played at quite a number of charity functions to raise funds for certain organisations, including the Malaysian Red Crescent Society. I would like to offer my services to play any charitable functions to raise funds for worthy causes, e.g. (to free bonded labourers from their plight, especially those that we hear about in South Asia). It is saddening to note that slavery is still prevalent in this part of the world & therefore I strongly feel that this form of social injustice should be eradicated.

Incidentally, you may be interested to know that my repertoire consist mainly of the evergreens which include anything from "country & western, rock & roll, ballads & some of the sentimental contemporary songs." It has been my ambition to have an album to my name, but however, I've been rejected by the Major Recording Companies in this country. Perseverance and a love for perennial pop favourites drive Alfred Ho to sing. Although he has had to face more odds and obstacles than the average person, he relishes painting new mental pictures of the songs he sings over and over again.

By anyone's count, Ho is a veteran in the music circuit. He carved a name for himself in the 70's, singing the popular standards as well as his own compositions. He became a star of sorts when he entered Bakat TV, s popular talent contest organised by RTM. He didn't do too badly. He reached the semi-finals, a journey which led to other opportunities on radio and TV. Even today, he gets recognised in the streets.

Everything has changed since then. Contemporary hit songs are heavily saddled with bass beats, rap rhymes and crunching guitar sounds. In that realm of cacophony, Ho believes there's still a strong following for the pop evergreens. His repertoire spans everyone from Ray Charles, Johnny Horton, Elvis Presley to Cliff Richard.

"There are a lot of evergreen songs that I would love to share because they always sound good and bring happy feelings," enthuses Ho. "I enjoy the element of spontaneity because the audience tends to loosen up. By performing song requests, I expect that they will enjoy a slice of golden nostalgia."

After all these years, Ho sounds like someone whose faith in hope and joy is renewed each time he sings. In his heyday, he was often referred to as the "Jose Feliciano of Malaysia," a very flattering nickname considering that Feliciano is a six-time Grammy Award winning singer, guitarist and composer who was born blind.

Ho may not have a Grammy on his mantle shelf but like Feliciano he is blind, caused by a measles attack when he was three. Nothing, however, deterred this strong-willed man from trying to achieve his dream.

One fine day, Ho hopes to perform in Las Vegas. It may sound like an unattainable dream, but nothing seems impossible for Ho who used to attach rubber bands to a biscuit tin and then strummed it like a guitar. With help from a schoolmate, he learned a few basic chords and taught himself to play. By the time he reached adulthood, he had polished up his guitar-playing skills and even composed a few songs.

He did not have any formal musical training or family support but Ho was always confident and wanted a chance to prove himself. His lucky break came when he asked a local radio station for an audition to play music on a show. They asked him to appear on a show called TAKE FIVE alongside some radio personalities, one of whom was Patrick Teoh. With encouragement from friends, he entered Bakat TV and the rest of the story...well, the story has many more chapters to go.

Unfortunately, such opportunities have been few and far between. Ho feels there is a lot of discrimination towards disabled performers based on his many experiences where people have expressed interest in his work only to withdraw when they learned that he is blind. He is also saddened by the lack of support from blind associations and other organisations.

But these are minor setbacks as Ho is an optimist. Today, he brims with enthusiasm for just the chance to share his songs with an audience. All the better if they sing along with him.

Alfred Ho is in dire straits, or so he laments. "I can get by with at least one show a month," says Ho. "But now, I don't even get one show a month..and I have to live on my savings."

Even so, Ho isn't one to rest on his laurels and await handouts. He has recorded a new album which he hopes will help ease his financial woes.

NOSTALGIA GOLD, Ho's latest album of 24 songs, continues in almost the same vein as his previous albums. Almost, because this time around, it's not only rare old songs, but also some common or better-known hits from the 1980's and early 1990's.

"Those who buy my Cd's know that my concept is always old favourites," says Ho. But this time around, he decided to make the album more accessible by including songs that people can easily recognise and enjoy.

NOSTALGIA GOLD includes songs like the two-stepping ACKY BREAKY HEART, the Eagles' TEQUILA SUNRISE, ROSES ARE RED, BLUE SUEDE SHOES, HEY GOOD LOOKING and Nilson's EVERY BODY'S TALKING.

"It's a good selection of songs that will probably reach across the board to please many listeners." And from the sound of the recording, it is clear that the production has been handled professionally, which is one of Ho's self-imposed requirements.

"When we do an album, we have to conform to the normal standards," says Ho. "It's better to have a good backing band. During a show, it's okay for me to play the guitar alone to a rhythm machine. But on an album, because people will keep it for a life-time, it has to be as good as possible. Only if I were as well known as, say Paul McCartney, then I can do an unplugged album. But I'm not, so I don't want to take the risk. I'm financing this album myself."

However, the album faces an uncertain future, since there is practically no advertising or backing from any recording company. It would obviously be difficult to sell the album without any form of marketing.

NOSTALGIA GOLD is Ho's fourth album, the other three being, SPECIAL GEMS, LOVE SONGS IN GOLD and NOSTALGIC COUNTRY AND EVERGREEN FAVOURITES. The singer-guitarist has always produced his own albums, but one thing he has yet to do is include some of his own compositions, although he did release two EP Vinyls of originals earlier in his career.

"I still feel it's not the time for me to put my own songs into my albums," explains Ho. "I'm not a household name yet, so I don't know how much people are willing to accept that. So far, I still don't have the confidence."

These days, he says, his songs hardly get airplay on radio stations. Asked if it's because today's music caters more for youngsters who may not take to old songs that enthusiastically, Ho says it's not necessarily so.

"I know because when I play an old song in the shopping complexes, they will ask my wife if it's a new song, because they like it," says the Perak born singer. "My songs are more for those in their 30's, 40's and 50's. But then, I don't see why youngsters can't also enjoy my music. This time around, I've included some new songs, so I've not forgotten them." But he cautions : "Of course you can improve on these old songs, but I don't think you need to change them so drastically. Recording techniques in the old days weren't as good as the new ones. And you will have to improve on that. But I don't think you have to change it 100%."

Ho became blind at the age of three after a bout of measles. He studied at the St Nicholas School for the Blind in Penang. There he developed a love for music and learnt how to play the guitar by himself. His talent came to public prominence after performing on a show called TAKE FIVE on Rediffusion in 1971. In 1983, he made a hard decision to quit his 10-year old job as a telephone operator to become a full-time entertainer. Since then, his career has been a uphill battle against a difficult music industry and unscrupulous characters but through it all, Ho never relinquished his dreams.

He believes that opportunity should be given to handicapped individuals for their talents to flourish and that they should not all be forced to become basket-weavers or telephone operators.

"People think that because I have made albums, I'm doing very well," says Ho. "But it is not so. Many people do not realise this."

It is tough these days for sighted musicians, what more for the disabled ones. For blind singer-guitarist Alfred Ho, jobs are hard to come by.

Although he has four albums under his belt, Ho says he has not been able to find work for the past four months. "My wife has called up shopping complexes to ask if they would have me play my music at their premises, but when they heard that it was a blind person, they turned me down. They should as least give me a chance to prove myself. It they don't like what they hear, they can always turn me away."

Ho feels the government should be helpful to the disabled.

"What the government can do, is contact the various organisations for the disabled and ask for musicians to perform at government functions and on television," says Ho. "Rather than give them welfare aid, why not give them gainful employment? A lot has been said about employing the disabled, but nothing much has been done really. If the disabled are given jobs, they can be useful to the community and contribute to the nation too."

"I am not asking for donations. I am willing to work for the money," Ho stresses.

In 1983, Ho made the tough decision of quitting his job as a telephone operator to become a full-time musician. He had his own show on Radio 4 for a while but it was discontinued in July 2000 when a fire broke out at RTM's premises.

Ho says he has tried his hand at other jobs but that did not work out. He tried massaging for a while but due to rheumatism, he ended up with painful hands. He is thinking of setting up a small place to play his music but that again requires money.

Ho feels the government should set an example by hiring disabled musicians itself. Instead of getting disabled musicians to perform only at special occasions, the government should look into hiring them more regularly. "Auditions can be held for the musicians to see if they meet the standards," says Ho.

"If they don't and are rejected, then it is understandable. But they should be given a chance. If the government shows that it is serious about helping the disabled, then the disabled will be motivated to work hard. Right now, there is no incentive for them at all. In fact, a lot of disabled musicians may be feeling discouraged."

"There may be a lot of talented disabled musicians out there but who will hire them? It is still up to the government to make a difference."

Singer Alfred Ho has never let his handicap get between him and his desire to sing. The man has experienced hard times but he has taken them in his stride and emerged a stronger person.

And if anything, his third album NOSTALGIC COUNTRY AND EVERGREEN FAVOURITES, is proof that determination and the right attitude do carry a person far. The singer recalls, "It was difficult for me and life became bitter because when I approached some recording companies, they did not respond favourably to my request."

The trips to the numerous record shops he made were humiliating, he says, because it showed people didn't take him seriously. Finally, he came out with his own money to finance the project. The 47-year-old Ho, who has been singing for more than 2 decades, has put together in one package, some great golden oldies because " I want people to know me better and since the younger generation hardly get to hear these songs, I thought of doing it for their benefit." The album features 16 country and evergreen songs namely, TALE OF MARIE, MUSIC TO WATCH GIRLS BY, SIXTEEN CUBES OF SUGAR, GREAT BIG WORLD and TEN THOUSAND MILES.

Ho received a lot of encouraging words from his fans when his first and second albums were released. But a lot of his fans told him that they prefer his "LIVE" performances. Though best known for his country music, some people label him THE MALAYSIAN STEVIE WONDER, a tag he takes as a compliment.

who says our authorities are not doing their job

I wish to take issue with the police for their high-handed manner in dealing with several blind individuals who were after all only trying to earn an honest living by selling tissues at street corners. As a blind individual myself, I must count myself fortunate not to have to hawk my wares at street corners, as I might just be one of their statistics. Why can't police set their priorities right by tackling rampant crime in this country instead of targeting poor defenceless blind citizens. This is indeed most deplorable & uncalled for. It looks like disabled citizens of this country have no place under the malaysian sun. So let me make a strong plea to all my handicapped brothers & sisters to vote in a new government, so that we can have a brighter future ahead. Remember to vote wisely, for once a mistake is made, there is no turning back.

Still can't believe it's not democracy

Isn't it ironical that we have a building known as the palace of justice, when justice is almost nonexistent in this beloved land of ours. It is indeed puzzling to learn that a youth who stabbed his tution teacher's daughter 20 times only served a 5 year sentence. This is certainly absurd. Another matter which I wish to bring up is to why the selangor mentri besar decreed that the infamous politician, Zakaria can keep his job when charges have been preferred against him. If my memory serves me correct, he was not even present in court when charges were brought against him. By the way, there are rumours that he is turning his palace into a discoteque, have you been invited to the soft launch?

Finally, let us all send a clear message to the government that enough is enough and unless they mend their ways, we will try to boot them out with our precious votes. Remember to vote wisely my friends, for once a mistake is made, there is no turning back. Dear Susan,

Read your piece about Mahathir and I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. Do not allow him to make use of us bloggers. After all, it was during his rule that my troubles all began and in my personal opinion, Mahathir is already a spent force and irrelevant. In fact, if I am not mistaken, I believe that both Badawi and Mahathir have already mended fences, as during his long speech, Mahathir was not as hard hitting with Badawi as he used to be. Anyway, let us give Mahathir the credit that is due to him, and that he is still a good orator inspite of his age. However, let us not be fooled by the ex premier, because we all know that part of his ill will towards the current government is because he is no longer in the driving seat. As you will have noticed, Susan, Mahathir has made it abundantly clear that he is not against UMNO or the BARISAN government, but he is unhappy with some members of the present administration and their corrupt ways. If I remember correctly, all this corruption and abuse of the legal system started during his reign, although in all fairness to Mahathir himself, it has gotten worse when the Badawi administration took over. Mahathir has catergorically stated that he has no intentions of siding with the opposition, so from what he is saying, we all know too well that he is only safeguarding his own interests, and his concerns for the country and its subjects rings very hollow. Finally, Susan, keep on blogging, and may we bring about change in the forthcoming general elections.

Blind singer Alfred Ho may be a household name to many but he may be one of only a few success stories among the visually-impaired in Malaysia.

Ho has garnered a reputation as a pub singer, doing the Malaysian nightspot circuit but his gigs are few and far between, secured by word of mouth.

Anyhow, he does not comply with the basket-weaving or telephone-operating jobs normally associated with his lot. Ho has also stepped out of the realm of his peers found busking near the Puduraya bus terminal or outside department stores in Kuala Lumpur.

But Ho who is self-supported is not a happy man. He feels the government and the private sector should do more to improve the welfare of the blind, especially singers and musicians.

"I am appealing to the Ministry of Information and the private sector to charge a minimal fee, if not free, for advertising our musical works," said Ho.

He was speaking at a Press conference to promote his third english album "NOSTALGIC COUNTRY & EVERGREEN FAVOURITES. "When I first found out how expensive radio advertising rates were, I got the shock of my life. I simply couldn't afford them."

Despite his impairment, the 47 year old Ho still has a keen insight into the vital role advertising plays. "Strong advertising is a very important strategy in determining sales," said Ho, who is speaking from experience where his previous two english efforts, "SPECIAL GEMS" and "LOVE SONGS IN GOLD" managed to "break even" despite an absence of advertising.

"The 16 songs in NOSTALGIC COUNTRY & EVERGREEN FAVOURITES are my personal selections. The songs are rare and cannot be found in the market but as the title suggests, are timeless," said Ho, rattling off titles such as LITTLE DUTCH GIRL, VENUS IN BLUE JEANS, SWEET GYPSY ROSE, WITCH DOCTOR, THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE and I DON'T CARE IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES.

And opportunities are non-existent, Ho lamented, in the advertising jingles market. "It's a closed market which is monopolised by the same set of players. I tried to break into it a few times but was given the brush-off," said Ho, who became blind at the age of three after a bout of measles.

With music in his blood (I used to make music by pulling rubber bands on a tin drum), Ho started playing the guitar on his own at the age of eight after becoming inspired by a schoolmate's expertise on the instrument. Ho later became a guitar maestro and decided to test his singing and musical skills in the BAKAT TV contest in 1971, where he managed to reach the semi-finals.

"I sang my own compositions TRAIN TO TENNESSEE and WENDY'S LOVE SONG in that talentime contest and the two songs were later released as EPs," reminisced Ho, who later gave up his job as a telephone operator to become a full-time singer. He does not reject his decision but still finds his road to stardom littered by pitfalls and potholes.

I would like to express the view that during my one year of service at THR, I wish that you could have been more considerate and more sincere in your dealings towards me.

Take your mind back to the time when I first joined THR. Although we were hardly acquainted with each other, you found it fitting to send me an invitation to attend your wedding in Ipoh. Owing to the fact that I had to travel quite a distance, I was unable to attend but decided that it was only right and proper to make you a small donation as a kind gesture. However, for reasons best known to yourself, I have yet to receive an acknowledgement from you for the little contribution that I made. I wonder if my contribution was too small and that it did not warrant any acknowledgement from you. Could it also have been the cause for you to harbour ill-feelings towards me all this while?

Eversince your rise to power, it has come to my understanding that you are very unpopular with certain DJs. It has been said that you no longer sympathize with the DJs when they have problems but chose instead to side the management. You do not care what happens to others in the process, just as long as you succeed in achieving your ambitions. I strongly feel that I am qualified to make this statement against you as I have become one of your victims. It is my contention that you have impeeded my progress and somehow you had to make sure that I did not get more jobs in THR. Whenever I tried to have a discussion with you, you would always politely brush me off lightly by using your favourite catch phrase "I'll catch up with you later." Obviously, you jolly well know that each time I approached you, I would be asking you for more jobs, so you chose not to give me a chance to discuss things with you. At the same time, you tried to find fault with me on several occasions. For example, when THR shifted from RTM to Wisma Time, I was deliberately not informed. Fortunately, I took the initiative to listen in to THR at 6am and heard that the station was broadcasting from the new place. As I recall, two minutes prior to my programme was to come on the air, you had the audacity to ring me up to check if I had turned up for duty. I asked you why you did not inform me about the fact that THR had already shifted, you declared that you did inform me but to the best of my knowledge, you did no such thing. You then chose to conveniently put the blame on your poor receptionist and so as to escape all responsibilities, you had to tell a pack of lies. Do you know that by your irresponsible actions, you could have got the receptionist into a whole load of trouble? I therefore conclude that you are both insensitive and uncaring towards others.

There was also a time when my wife was hospitalized and you adopted a vary uncaring attitude. As I remember, you did not even enquire as to how she was doing, let alone wishing her a speedy recovery. So as not to let my programme lapse for 2 weeks, I took it upon myself to offer to record the show at home. Inspite of all the hard work involved, I did not even count the recording costs and asked only to be paid my normal wages which is a mere RM30. I put itt to you that it then dawned on you that here was a chance for you to take my programme off the air and you subsequently told me that it was not possible to play a pre-recorded show on the air as the station would then have to pay 2 DJs for just one programme. When queried as to why this was so, you stated that you could not take any chances for fear of the equipment breaking down. I ask you, why do you have so little faith in the station's so-called hi-tech equipment or are you trying to imply that the equipment that the station is utilizing is not good enough? To put yourself in a good light, you told me that you would have to consult Puan Karimah for the final decision, but I subsequently found out from her that you did not even raise the matter with her at any time. I wish to quote her on that particular occasion "QUOTE - Keep this between us, Albert is a very dis-organised person - UNQUOTE." What she meant by that is anyone's guess.

I recalled attending a meeting where both you and Gerard were attacked by Patrick Joseph (verbally, of course) and at that time I thought that it was improper of him to have hit out at both of you. I even recall sympathizing with you after the meeting was over. However, on hind-sight, I strongly feel that both of you deserved to be bombarded and I now realise my folly in having sympathized with both of you. Finally, it is my contention that you are jealous of the fact that I play a better mix of songs on my programme than you do on yours and as such, you have tried to keep my listenership to a bare minimum. You made sure that you did not give me any prizes to give away on my shows, whilst you had numerous prizes to give away on yours. Each time I tried to ask you for prizes, you would say "I'll look into it." One year has gone by and I bet that you are still looking into it.

I wonder if you recall an incident, when you called me up one day to inform me that you caught James Sze-To (ex-security guard) having access to my personal locker. I did subsequently inform you that I had given him full permission to do so purely on humanitarian grounds, as some disgruntled members of your staff were tearing up his files because of his strict enforcement of the many tight security, rules and regulations that you have in place. After all, he was only doing his job and as such it is sad to note that people would stoop so low to commit such a vile act. You will recall that I even apologized to you for not seeking prior permission from you for him to use my locker and you told me that it was perfectly alright for him to do so, as long as I was happy about it. About a week later, I was informed by James that he was given a reprimand and was told that he was never to use my locker again. Why all the hipocrisy, Albert? Why could you not have told me straight away that he was not allowed to use my locker under any circumstances, instead of acting like a good samaritan?

Recently there was a recruitment drive to get some new DJs to fill up the posts of some VALUABLE DJs that had just left the station. However, having served the station for almost a year, I was side-lined and was not even given a chance to get more air-time. As head of the DJs, I find your attitude most shocking and it really baffles me as to how you managed to secure this position in the company. My true opinion of you is that you are biased and full of prejudice against me. I have been employed by the station for just about a year now and I am no better then when I started off where jobs are concerned. Even people who have just recently joined the station have been given more than 10 hours of air-time in a week. How do you explain this, Albert? If you contend that I am not a good DJ, then why was I not dispensed with after the probation period? On the other hand, as you would have me believe that I have the makings of a good DJ, why was I not sent for any training to become a better DJ? I put it to you, Albert, that you were just waiting for me to be disgruntled and then resign of my own accord. Unfortunately for you, I persisted and as such all your plans to get me out of the establishment fell apart. You always try to give yourself the Mr Nice Guy image but in actual fact to my mind you are both calculating and mean.

I recall some months ago informing you that I had just shifted to a new place, as I had just bought a small flat of my own, to which you remarked that it was fortunate of me to be working for THR which only made it possible for me to buy up this flat. Of course, you and I both know that what you said was a whole load of crap. However, if that statement of yours was made in jest then I think that your joke was made in very bad taste.

Albert, I certainly hope that this letter will be an eye-opener for you and that you should not take handicap people lightly in future.

At the age of three, Perak born Alfred Ho suffered from a bout of measles that led him to go blind for the rest of his life. It was a very cruel blow to such a young life but he moved on, journeying in total darkness armed with nothing but the light of sheer determination and hope. After completeing his primary education in a school for the blind, he enrolled for vocational training in Kuala Lumpur and was trained as a telephone operator. Armed with skills, he entered the job market and managed to get a job as a telephone operator in Penang. His income, although small, was sufficient to get him through to the next pay day. And the next...and the next...and the next for the next ten years. Secure? Yes. Satisfied? Absolutely not. Although conditioned by blindness, Alfred, like most people, had big dreams. His passion was and still is, singing. And like all ambitious individuals, he wanted to live his dreams, even earning his bread and butter doing the thing closest to his heart.

His journey started rather cautiously though, singing in public events part time while keeping his job. He even took part in the "Bakat TV" in the 70's (later known as Bintang RTM) and sang his way into the semi-finals. But the thought of diving into it on a full-time basis did not come until the mid-80's. "I came to a point in my life that I decided to follow my dreams seriously. So I left my job and came to KL" he recalled during an interview with THE BORNEO POST prior to his charity concert here in Kota Kinabalu last week. That was when reality struck. He realised soon enough that the mainstream entertainment industry had no place for people like him. It was fine for them that he sang in charity shows or organized public events but not on a professional basis. He did actually manage to get a radio deejay job after much persistence but claimed that his employers were actually not sincere in hiring him. Eventually, he lost the job after "they made my life difficult" but later won a court battle against them. Already sentenced to a life of blindness, Alfred found himself groping in the dark for a singing break that would place him somewhere in the competetive industry. But he has yet to make it anywhere until today, about 20 years after he first turned a full time singer. "My experience is all about facing one rejection after another. The discrimination against people like me is very bad I tell you" lamented the 56-year old who plays the guitar as he sings. He even had to produce all his four "albums" by himself, as no recording label showed any interest in him. The "albums" contained not songs that he produced himself but those rarely played on the radio and sold whenever he was hired to do a public performance. The fees he gets from inconsistent stage performances - mostly charity dinners, have never been enough to see him through in a month. Many times he went through months without a singing job. During those times, he was forced to search for options, anything to pay the bills. "I applied for (ordinary) jobs but even then I was turned down. It was frustrating." On various occasions, out of desperation, he dared himself to approach political leaders for help but ended getting even more frustrated, even angry. "I came to one political party's office but the person in-charge arrogantly told me to go back to my (blind) association for help as he could not assist me....The society always say that they care for people like me. From my experience, I find that it is not true. If they were sincere, I would have already been given the chance to earn a living from my talents," he said. He did a earn a living from his talents alright... on the streets like other blind musicians. "I did it a couple of times, not because I wanted to but because I had no other choice. But if I could, then I would not have done it because I would only be degrading myself. People would say, "why would we pay so much to see you perform on stage, having paid far less to you when you were in the streets." "I don't mean to look down on other blind musicians who are earning their living as street performers. I just place a certain standard on myself and I always believe I deserve a better treatment. Not just me but all those people like me who have talents," he admitted.

Things went from bad to worse when he was behind in his instalment payments for the flat-house he bought during his financially "stable" days. His appeal to the bank for more time on grounds of his physical and financial condition was always not entertained. Life's pressure finally took a toll on him when he was diagnosed to have suffered from severe hypertension. But thankfully, time was on his side. He reached 55 and was able to withdraw his EPF savings from which he settled most of his dues plus interests. He is currently living with his wife Rufina, who is partially-blind. The couple have no children."How can I have children? I can hardly take care of myself." Rufina's small income as a part-time nurse is barely enough to meet their basic needs. Currently, Alfred has gone five months without any source of income. The little money he has left in his savings is fast drying up. He has to look for something to continue living. "All I'm asking for, is to be given a chance, that's all."

Letter To Gerard Vincent - Oct 2nd 1997

Programme Director,
Time Highway Radio.

2nd Oct 1997.

Eversince you took up the post of programme director for the station, you have been trying to throw your weight around and finding fault with me in everything I do where my programme is concerned. On several occasions, you even threatened to take me off the air and I think that your high-handed approach was most uncalled for.

Many a times you had tried to put me down by continually critizising me on my programme presentation and to my mind some of your criticisms have no basis whatsoever. You also questioned my technical capabilities saying that my recordings are not fit for broadcast, whilst at the same time you allowed substandard materials to go on the air. A glaring example is Albert Ng's retro show on 20th Sept 1997 at around 11.30am, when he played a very poor quality recording of Elton John's latest version of "Candle In The Wind". You do not need a keen sense of hearing to know that the source of the material was made via a bad telephone line or at least a substandard cassette machine. Subsequently, this particular recording was even aired by some of your other DJs. How do you explain this? You are supposed to be a technical wizard but yet allowed this to slip through your finger-tips. On 21st Sept 1997, at around the same time, I heard one of your female DJ swearing on the air with these words "O MY GOD". I therefore question your credibility as programme director of the station, as you could not even prevent all these things from going on the air.

I recall that during one of my sessions with you, I was told that I should talk less and play more music. When I complied by playing 4 songs in a row instead of 2 as I used to do, you took me to task by threatening to take me off the air. You clearly thought that as programme director, you had the right to hire and fire but I think otherwise. You even had the audacity to warn me that I was not supposed to inform the listeners that certain songs were not on the playlist and I'll have you know that even international stations, such as the BBC have no qualms about telling the listeners that they are not able to play certain songs that have been requested as these songs were not available at that point and time. As you are aware, almost 100% of the material that is aired over my programmes have been derived from my own collection of CDs and MDs. I put it to you that you are only trying to hoodwink the public into believing that THR has a well-stocked music library and we all know that to be false. I therefore conclude that this is a face-saving measure for the station and you jolly-well know that the truth will come out sooner or later.

You even pointed out to me that I should play more music and talk less. However, when I pointed out to you that certain of your DJs even clown around during their programmes to the extend of interupting the music, you told me that you would put a stop to this once and for all. Subsequently, you went back on your word by saying that it was alright for certain DJs to clown around on their shows as they were reflecting the identity of the station. As I recall, both you and Puan Karimah expressed the view that it was most entertaining. I even recalled that when I disagreed, both of you took offence and stormed out of the meeting that we had recently.

Following that incident, you rang me up telling me how incensed you were that a listener should call you up to complain about my new programme format. As usual, you started to use vile threats but when I challenged your authority, you than decided to relieve me of my duties. I remember telling you that I would not take any orders from you and that I would like to have a meeting with Puan Karimah. You then subsequently arranged for me to have a meeting with both you and herself but I strongly believe that my fate had already been decided by the both of you. As it turned out, Puan Karimah's attitude was most uncompromising and as such my fate was sealed even from the word go.

I recall that during the meeting, I made you out to be a liar and I knew that there was no turning back. When I told Puan Karimah about your short-comings, you of course defended yourself but her ears were closed to what I had to say. It is my believe that both of you were in league with each other and as such, I knew for certain that my days in THR were numbered. It has therefore come to me as no surprise that my contract has not been extended, thanks to your evil schemes. You may remember that towards the end of the meeting, I did express the fact that I would expose all the injustices that have been going on and that handicap people should not be taken lightly. I am appalled at the manner in which the meeting broke up when Puan Karimah shouted "I'M GOING OFF."

I remember asking you as to why some of your top DJs had left the station and was told that when they did not get what they wanted, they tried to use strong-arm tactics and even went as far as to send you hate mail. "QUOTE - when they found that they were not getting anywhere, they had no alternative but to send in their resignations - UNQUOTE". I put it to you, Gerard, that you are the one that is using strong-arm tactics and I find you most intimidating, vindictive and above all egoistic. Let me remind you that you even tried to intimidate me by threatening to take me off the air should I not take heed of your warnings.

Gerard, I certainly hope that this letter will be an eye-opener for you and that you should not take handicap people lightly in future.

Dear Teresa,

Allow me to introduce myself. I am a blind individual and a singer, guitarist by profession. It may interest you to learn that I happen to be one of your constituents, as I reside in kuchai lama. I have decided to write to you after having visited your blog. For your information, I have created a blog where I talk about retro music and local politics. Like many right thinking malaysians, I am really disillutioned with the barisan government. As a matter of interest, I would very much like to campaign for the opposition against this very dictatorial government, because I strongly feel that it's about time we had a change of government. You maybe interested to learn that I recently attended a press conference at the PKR headquarters where one of malaysia's top political commentators namely, KIM QUEK was recruited as a member of PKR. At that particular event, I had the golden opportunity of meeting up with DATUK SERI ANWAR IBRAHIM and his wife, AZIZAH. I had quite a long chat with ANWAR himself where I told him about my disillutionment with the current government. I even told him that I am willing to campaign for the opposition in every way possible. Unlike most other musicians, Alfred Ho can sing non-stop for two hours without taking the occasional sip of warm water. This is especially true when he's doing a "live" show, which is his forte and his favourite kind of performance. "Frankly, I prefer those performances in which I can interact with the audience. Playing at pubs and shopping complexes tend to be a lot more informal, the crowd will sing along or clap to your beat," says Ho. "At company dinners and other functions on the other hand, the audience is usually too busy eating to participate. They're at their best behaviour rather than their rowdy best."

Ho should know, being a veteran performer at various scenes. Since 1985, when he moved to Kuala Lumpur to pursue a career as a full-time singer, he has performed at weddings, parties, pubs and numerous shopping complexes. The present King and Queen of the country have ballroom-danced to his music and most of the older folk listen in rapt attention, swept back in a wave of nostalgia whenever they hear him yodelling "I DON'T CARE IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES" or belting out his own version of the Bee Gees "WORDS".

He has three albums of melodious and lively oldies to his name ; SPECIAL GEMS, LOVE SONGS IN GOLD and NOSTALGIC COUNTRY AND EVERGREEN FAVOURITES. Most of the songs on these albums are familiar oldies but they are difficult to locate on existing records in the market.

It would not be wise to assume, however, that Ho can only sing oldies. Although he will not bother with heavy metal or underground genres, he does try to cater to the tastes of his younger fans. At a recent performance in Radio City, he gave a rendition of LEMON TREE. What was surprising was that it wasn't the older version but the new one popularised by the group Fool's Garden."As a singer, I must keep up with the times. Still, I will only sing songs that are suited to me. Some of the (relatively) newer songs I've done include ACHY BREAKY HEART, RIGHT HERE WAITING and ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE.

Born in the small village of Klian Intan in Perak, Ho had an attack of measles at the age of three. This resulted in his becoming blind. He was eventually trained in telephone operating but, since young, Ho has always had a love for music. "I started playing the guitar when I was in standard six. In the beginning, I learned a few chords from a friend, the rest I picked up myself," recalls Ho.

Since he began his musical career, Ho has been playing his songs using only an accoustic guitar and a drum machine. All of his shows are "live" performances. "I don't use minus one, as I feel that a true performer should be a "live" performer," states Ho with conviction. "Besides, my only form of exercise is strumming the guitar, so I want to do that as often as I can," he jokes.

Nevertheless, he isn't kidding when he says that. Ho has never done any vocal or physical warm-ups before his performances. For him, such exercises just do not seem to be necessary. "To be honest, I don't even practise that much," he admits. "Only when I feel like it." In spite of this, he sings with apparently minimal effort and boundless energy. His voice is rich, deep and quite clearly, 100 per cent natural.

Perhaps this energy has something to do with the fact that, wherever he's playing, Ho often just can't wait for the show to start. "My most exciting moment is when I'm about to begin a show. I'm raring to go. I feel like I'm in a racing car, anticipating the starting gun. I'm quite disappointed when any of my shows start late," he confesses.

"Once I start, the whole stage is mine. It's my world. Usually I find it very hard to stop, because the more I play, the more energetic I feel. I think I could be successful if I was given a chance to play overseas - I wouldn't need to take a break every 20 minutes. I could just do a marathon show!

"Besides, the minute a performer takes a break, the crowd will disperse. So when I play in a shopping mall, for instance, and my albums are selling well. I'll just keep playing. As long as I'm singing, I don't really need or want a drink. I only want a drink "after" my show is over," he insists.

By now, it is more than obvious why Ho feels that the time slot he's been given on the Time Highway Radio station is much too short. He hosts the 'The Music Connection with Alfred Ho'. "Half an hour is very little time and I'm still quite new at this, so I do get nervous sometimes. Ironically, by the time I warm up, it's time to say goodbye to my listeners. If I had a two or three hour slot, I could probably improve at a faster rate," explains Ho.

"Don't get me wrong - I'm grateful that THR has given me an opportunity to be a deejay. They're the only radio station I approached who gave me a chance," reveals Ho, who feels that sometimes all the talk about a "caring society" are mere words. "Most other companies come up with all sorts of excuses when I approach them, in effect telling me that, because I can't see, I won't be able to handle the equipment involved in deejaying. "That's UTTER NONSENSE because if they don't even give me a chance in the first place, how can I learn and improve on my skills?"

Anyhow, Ho isn't the only person who feels that his radio programme should be extended. "Quite a few of my callers and the people who write in to me have requested that as well, so I think that speaks for itself," he says. For the THR slot, THE MUSIC CONNECTION contains rather unusual fare. After all, there's a half-hour airplay of old songs on what is generally perceived as the hip, "with it", alternative station.

"A few people told me that they tuned into the station by chance and were surprised at the kind of music they heard through the airwaves. One of my callers was a 17-year-old girl who was a cancer patient and she told me she doesn't normally like old songs but really enjoyed WITCH DOCTOR. I think there'll always be a demand for such oldies, these songs are melodious and will never go out of style," relates Ho.

Ho rather enjoys hearing his own voice on the radio. "Well, apart from singing and meeting up with my friends, I like deejaying," he says, smiling. "I'm interested in writing jingles for commercials but the jingle market is difficult to break into. It's a very lucrative market and it also seems quite monopolistic," says Ho, who composed and recorded the promotional jingle for THE MUSIC CONNECTION.

He's been through a lot of tough experiences and people have put him down on many occasions but Ho remains determined to achieve the success which is his due. He isn't above the occasional dream of international recognition, either. "I once wrote a letter to Sir Cliff Richard at his fan club address , introducing myself and offering to do a charity show with him or even sing along with him in some of the songs for his future albums," reveals Ho.

And what did the esteemed Richard say? "I don't think the letter even got to his hands. After a period, I received a reply from his fan club saying that, if Cliff Richard were to grant my request, he would also have to help millions of others. Basically, the answer was a "NO".

Of course, Ho was disappointed but he wasn't fazed. He had expected such a reply and after all, he had lost nothing by asking. "I did it mostly for the fun of it; the worst thing anyone can possibly say is that, they can't help you. That's not so bad, is it?" He goes on to say that, if Elvis were alive, he'd probably get in touch with him as well, and he has thought about approaching The President of the USA, asking if he could perform at a White House function. He has also written to embassies and organizations in Las Vegas and Australia. One thing's for sure - Ho cannot be accused of lacking derring-do.

"It may sound eccentric to some people but at the end of the day, if I get my lucky break, I'll be the one who has the last laugh," declares the singer.

Singer Alfred Ho does not believe in meekly waiting for things to happen. Instead, he constantly strives for the best in life. And it has been difficult every step of the way.

He doesn't expect people to hand everything to him on a silver platter just because he is blind. He only wants to be given a fair chance in spite of his blindness. Above all he wishes for sincerity.

Both are hard to come by, despite Malaysians' general generosity with money. Being one who bluntly speaks his mind, Ho inadvertently bruises a few egos.

It will not stop him from being honest, he affirms, nor will it prejudice, intimidate him or make him give up his dream.

That dream is to become an instantly recognisable voice heard in Malaysian homes. Yes, he wants to be a radio deejay.

"Why do the blind have to be either telephone operators or stenographers? It is frustrating to find people restricting us to these jobs. We are not so much disabled by our sightlessness than the narrow-minded attitude of others", lamented Ho.

Ho's recent experiences as a DJ in one of the local radio stations was to say the least, unpleasant. "It was mainly the station management's insincerity that frustrated me. If I was lousy at the job, they ought to have told me so. They could choose to end my services or train me up, but they did neither. I was very willing to learn to operate the studio equipment but no one was willing to teach me," Ho said.

Still the 48 year old recording artiste continues to hope the handicapped will not be discriminated in employment and that they will be treated with respect and consideration.

His warm mellow voice has serenaded many over the radio and he has often performed his repertoire of songs to local and foreign audiences.

With such a following, and the fact that he has been on the local music scene for more than 20 years, one would expect Alfred Ho to be a success by now.

Yet, even with the release of his album "Special Gems" and with another in the pipeline, Ho's efforts to succeed seem to have been one long struggle since the blind singer's decision to turn full-time entertainer in 1984.

His is a story of determination and grit and constantly picking himself up again and again through a series of stumbling blocks from unresponsive record companies to unscrupulous clients.

Despite positive response from his listeners, Ho is simply striving to make ends meet for himself by performing at company dinners and through occasional sales of his albums.

As a former semi-finalist of RTM's Bakat TV in the 70's, Ho is definitely not lacking in talent but is in need of professional business management and strong marketing. This Ho frankly admits he does not possess.

"I know nothing about business", he says. This perhaps explains why he has often been given the run-around by companies and music stores and those whom he has approached for aid. But Ho is one pretty determined man and his actions tell. His experiences with his previous album has not deterred him from producing his second album titled "Love Songs In Gold", even though "Special Gems" received lukewarm response from recording companies and music stores.

This resulted in poor distribution of Ho's cassettes and CDs, which affected his income, although he received very encouraging response from the public, who had heard his songs over the radio.

"My decision to do a second album is because of the positive response I received for "Special Gems" from listeners. I even got encouraging calls asking me to release a second album", relates the 45 year old singer. Whatever lack of experience Ho has in marketing and distributing his albums, he has no problems identifying the niche market to whom he aims his music, The Nostalgic listeners.

"It's mainly an older market", he says adding that his music also appeals to many "youngsters", judging from the sales of his "Special Gems" albums. Ho feels that his focus on old favourites could not have been more timely as presently, many young groups and singers are coming out with remakes of old songs. "I believe that old songs are those that never die", he adds.

His latest album, set to be released in time for Valentine's Day, will feature old love songs with a difference. Ho says' "They are mostly rare songs, like Bobby Darin's (18 yellow roses) and (I'll Pretend) by Des O'Connor. They will be recorded as close as possible to the originals, to capture the song's nostalgia".

For "Love Songs In Gold", Ho has decided to invest the returns of his first album to having the new album recorded in a professional studio.

This will be a first for the singer who in the past has always done his own recording of his albums. "I will try to do a better album and to make it more impressive. Music-wise, it will be better because more musical instruments will be featured", he states.

Ho has been musically inclined since he learnt how to play the guitar while studying at Penang's St. Nicholas School for the blind. His early days in music include being the founder and member of a four-piece band known as The Sharks, solo performances in pubs and the highlight ; becoming a semi-finalist in RTM's Bakat TV during the 70's.

Prior to "Special Gems", Ho had come up with two Ep vinyl records compromising his own compositions. These days, however, he hardly has time to work on his own songs. "I am too busy learning songs. I sing mainly old favourites because this is what many people want to hear but I also have to keep up with the times and learn some current songs", he adds.

Ho's efforts to achieve success in his field is not just some dream for stardom and fame but rather to achieve that as a means to an end. His experiences have inspired him to use his talent to help people who like himself, are disabled.

For starters, he hopes to eventually set up his own recording studio where he would be able to help other handicapped singers and performers cut their own albums. "I believe there is a lot of talent amongst the handicapped and they should be given opportunities", he says, adding that he would also like to employ disabled people in the studio's workforce.

According to Ho, he has often volunteered his skills to help raise funds for the handicapped, as he feels that not enough is being done for them. "For instance, I feel there is a pressing need for a revolving fund or welfare aid for disabled people who have retired from their jobs and lost their steady flow of income".

As for his own music efforts, Ho believes that what he needs is more professional efforts and proper distributions of his albums. "If I don't do anything, there is nothing. But if I do, chances are there will be something", he adds simply.

And if perseverance ever had a name, it would definitely be Alfred Ho.

It can be quite an experience when one graduates from being a fan to being a friend of one's pop idol, as local blind singer Alfred Ho has found out.

"When I heard that Brian Hyland was in town, I tracked him down to the Damansara Westpoint Club where he was performing and they told me that he was staying at the Merlin (now Concorde KL).

"I called him at the hotel and asked for an interview for Newscast - a tape news magazine for the blind- and he obliged and told me to meet him at the hotel the next day," Alfred said.

And when Alfred, who had been a Brian Hyland fan since his teenage years, turned up at the hotel the next day, Brian was ready - and not just for the interview.

Armed with guitars, the two music lovers had a jam session which lasted about three hours. For Alfred, who had only dared to hope for an interview, the jam session was too good to be true."Brian is one of the nicest persons I have ever met. There were no airs about him. He struck me as a very warm, obliging and friendly person."

Alfred added that he sang a few songs and joined Brian in singing some of his oldies, including, GINNY COME LATELY and SEALED WITH A KISS.

"He invited me to his show that evening," Alfred said. Halfway through the show that evening, Brian invited Alfred onto the stage to do the number BYE BYE LOVE together with him.

"Never have I ever imagined that I would have the chance to perform a number on stage with Brian," Alfred said afterwards.

But that was not all. The next evening, immediately after his own show at the Damansara Westpoint Club, Brian Hyland went to the Cotton Club to watch Alfred perform. Brian later obliged the audience by singing two of his songs at the Cotton Club.

"I have always been A Brian Hyland fan but I hope I can now consider myself his friend," said Alfred, beaming from ear to ear.

Cinta's Passage To The Future charity drive on Tuesday brought two old chums together for a night of nostalgia, not only for themselves but also for the patrons who were at the discotheque.

They were 'smooth-talker' Patrick Teoh and blind singer/guitarist Alfred Ho, who share a 20 year friendship. And only Patrick could get away with telling everyone how, whenever Alfred sang his own country and western composition TRAIN TO TENNESSEE, appreciative women in the audience would hurl their undergarments at him.

The one-time TV newscaster, who met Alfred some 22 years ago during a Rediffusion audition, warmed the stage at Cinta before stepping back for his friend, who brought on warm memories of the days of Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Roy Orbison and the likes.

Alfred, with his accoustic guitar and rhythm machine, took everybody down memory lane, singing along to hits like Pretty Woman, Unchained Melody, Blue Suede Shoes, Fall In Love Again, La Bamba, a medley of old classics and his very own Train To Tennessee.

PATRICK HELPED LAUNCH MY SINGING CAREER, SAYS ALFRED

"Patrick is instrumental in launching my singing career," says Alfred Ho.

"No, it was his distinctive voice that got him where he is," contradicted Patrick Teoh.''

In an interview before their act at Cinta, the two Perak born buddies gleefully reminisced the good (and bad) old days. Alfred was discovered by Patrick one day in 1970 when the latter, then working as an assistant programme manager with Rediffusion, conducted the audition.

Said Patrick, "I was impressed with his distinctive vocals." The break advanced Alfred in the music field. He was a semi-finalist in the now defunct RTM Bakat TV in 1971, and has since appeared regularly in the station's entertainment programmes.

Right after Bakat TV, he released a four-track EP of his own compositions, namely, TRAIN TO TENNESSEE, SWEET RITA DIVINE, WENDY'S SONG and TEACHER'S LOVE SONG.

"I was really grateful to Patrick for taking the initiative during his radio deejaying days to play my songs, says the 42 year old singer. But it has been ages since he penned songs.

At this juncture Patrick chided him. "Alfred should compose more songs. He's talented. Know what his excuse is? - Lazy! Can you beat that?"

Throughout the years, Alfred who used to pop into the studios when Patrick was recording his programmes, never lost contact with his friend who has become a household name. Ho plays rock and roll, country and western and ballads but occasionally does contemporary numbers like Richard Marx's 'RIGHT HERE WAITING'.

Alfred had his early education at St. Nicholas in Penang, his secondary at St. Xavier's Institution before enrolling with the Vocational Centre for the Blind in Kuala Lumpur. A former telephone operator with the island's then City Council from 1974 to 1983, Alfred who is basically a self-taught musician with guidance from a St. Nicholas schoolmate, quit his job to go into the entertainment business.

"We haven't worked together for a long time. This reunion at Cinta is extra meaningful in that we are also chipping in to a good cause," said the duo

The smooth strummings of the guitar and melodious voice of the singer enveloped the hall. The guitarist was one of the guest artiste at the chinese new year charity bash at Penang Turf Club sponsored by Pan-Malaysian Pools Bhd recently. The audience recognized him - Alfred Ho - a blind but popular local singer of the 70's, dubbed the local "Jose Feliciano". He is hoping to make a comeback in the local musical scene.

Alfred had lamented that his blindness had always been a setback in his quest for a musical career. But after talking to him, one would have thought he was irrepressible. He had his chirpy voice which gave the impression he has never given up trying.

Alfred recalled that local recording companies had refused to help launch his self-made album, recorded last August, titled "Special Gems". The recording of the album cost him a hefty RM10,000, a big sum, saved from his singing stints in lounges and pubs. He was miffed when he could not find sponsors to finance the marketing of the album. Curious, I requested for a chance to listen to his "Special Gems" edition. The sound track, with it's limited accoustics and backing, did not do justice to his voice. It probably boils down to the lack of financial back-up for a more ornate and elaborate recording.

He said a few recording companies like WEA, BMG and PONYCANYON accepted his demo tapes but did not get back to him. Despite his failure to find sponsors to market his album, it did not deter him from further musical endeavours.

Recently,he completed another album titled "Love Songs In Gold". Alfred is hoping there would be sponsors to help cover costs in the production and marketing of the album.

"What I want is recognition. My only difference with other performers is my blindness," lamented Alfred, who adds, "why this discrimination in the asian society? I mean, what about Stevie Wonder, who despite his blindness, had made it in the USA music scene."

FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT FOR HO

Five thousand ringgit. That was what an Alfred Ho cassette tape fetched at an impromptu auction for charity two years ago.

It was at the second Asia Pacific Life Insurance Congress at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur. The 8,000 odd international delegates were sitting restlessly after hours of passive listening, when a surprise announcement came ; a singer would be entertaining them as the next speaker couldn't make it at the eleventh hour.

The singer turned out to be Alfred Ho, of course. Organising chairman Dr. Michael Chong had providentially spotted him at The Mall (across the road), where he was promoting his debut album Special Gems. Faced with an unexpected gap in the agenda, Chong thought Ho would be a welcome substitute.

Ho was more than that. He brought the capacity crowd at Dewan Merdeka to it's feet with his rendition of evergreen songs. Seeing the rousing response of the crowd, Chong seized the opportunity to hold an auction of three of Ho's tapes for charity. From RM400, the bidding was fast approaching RM2,000 when a Singaporean lady made the stunning offer which no one could top. Maybe the lady was very generous and maybe Chong demonstrated how good a persuader he was. But try explaining the thousands of people who sang and clapped along, not in half-hearted spurts either, but with genuine pleasure.

And if you think that was a normal reaction after hours of inactivity, what about the enthusiastic response from the crowd at KL's Sungei Wang Plaza recently, where Ho's show lasted an hour more than the scheduled 45 minutes. It's a rare singer who can incite an audience into singing along ; it's the sort of chemistry that requires stimulation by the senses and you wonder how Ho keeps up his end of the rapport without being able to see to gauge how well he is doing.

Because Ho, who was born in Klian Intan, Perak, has been blind since he was three. His blindness has everything to do with who he is and what he is doing now, so it's illogical to skirt around a fact with which he has lived almost all of his 45 years.

Initially, Ho thought of playing the guitar as just a hobby. He started performing when he couldn't get a job soon after he finished school. He turned full-time in 1984 despite friendly discouragement, leaving his 10 year post as a telephone operator at the Penang Municipal Council.

"I was willing to risk it. Something told me to go on. Maybe I was spurred by people who have complimented me on my singing." says Ho during an interview at his home. So he came to Kuala Lumpur and set about making himself known, accepting shows at shopping complexes for "very little".

It has been a long, lonely struggle, full of rebuffs and heartaches, but at least at the end of ten years, he has two albums to show for it. Released last month, his second album, LOVE SONGS IN GOLD contains 22 everlasting songs. Ho says, "The main thing is to create a feeling of nostalgia. I stick to the original rendition but try to improve it at the same time." His repertoire is not limited to oldies. It's just that for his albums, he'd rather feature rare songs because contemporary tunes are sung all the time. "There's a trend of reviving old songs now. They've just been given a different beat. But there's no escaping that they are oldies." Ho adds that the response to his album is such that people are already asking for his third album.

If he weren't handicapped, Ho would have made a no-nonsense boss who gets work done. At one time or another, everybody gets the runaround and most of us are resigned to it. But Ho is not one to take things lightly. He pulls no punches and tells of the treatment he gets from unscrupulous people, even organisations and corporations, who know that he cannot retaliate in kind, thinking of him as a charity case. It is disquieting to hear about the bullies Ho has had to deal with. He says he has even been threatened should he dare to expose the deception in some so-called charity projects. In the face of such arrogance and injustice, you wouldn't blame Ho if he has become embittered and given up.

Ho did became difficult. Some people even thought he was a pain in the neck. But he didn't give up. All he needs now is for his fans to rally behind him. Grassroot support is necessary for all artistes but in ho's case, it is pivotal because his audience is just about the only people who can see him through his career.

TOUCHING HEARTS WITH HIS MUSIC

For blind people, the sense of touch is one of the ways they perceive the world around them. However, blind singer-guitarist Alfred Ho turns the tables around and touches the hearts of people - with the magic of his music. The music industry is undoubtedly a hostile business but Ho has resolutely stuck to his chosen vocation as a professional musician for more than 20 years now.

It has not been easy for Ho and he laments on how difficult it is to make ends meet but he has never once looked back. Ho describes how he broke into the music business back in the 1970's when he was unemployed despite having been trained as a telephone operator.

"In those days, there was redifusion (the old cable-radio service) and I wrote in to them and eventually got roped in by Patrick Teoh and Royston Goh to do a series of programmes called the TAKE FIVE show."

While the show was an achievement for Ho, it did not get him national recognition due to the limited areas of coverage (mainly in big towns) in Malaysia.

His big break eventually came but it was an accident of sorts. He recalls, "I was asked to appear on a television programme called BAKAT TV and showed up to perform but little did I know it was a competition. Since I had already gone all the way, I decided to participate and I actually reached the semi-finals. After that, I was given the chance to participate in a lot of TV programmes but eventually settled on a job as a telephone operator. But my job brought in only RM190 a month and I had to supplement my income by performing."

Ho's passion for music continued to turn strongly and after 10 years on the job, he took the plunge and moved to Kuala Lumpur to seek his fortune - and has been doing it ever since.

"It was a big risk to take and I was only paid RM10 for a whole night of singing but of course RM10 went a lot further then."

Ho's willingness to take hard knocks only hints at how much passion he has for music. "Music is a part of my life - no, actually it is my life. You may starve me of food but not music. I am either playing or listening to music every day."

Ho remembers the first song he ever learnt to play on the guitar. "It was called NO MORE (the english version of LA PALOMA) and I learnt it because there were only two chords to play."

These days, Ho's repertoire of songs is voluminous and chances are he will be able to play almost any golden oldies they you ask him to. Ho reveals that he does not refer to any notes during his performances nor does he plan it out. So how does he gauge what the audience wants?

"I let them participate where possible. In every show the audience plays a very important part and it is more than just applause. I like it best when there is interaction and they sing along with me. If I can bring joy to people, I am happy myself."

Watching Ho in action shows what a confident performer he is. "There are no inhibitions as far as I am concerned - I do not feel nervous. Some people say I only have to open my mouth to make money but they do not realise the amount of work I have put in to memorize all the lyrics and the melodies of songs to play."

Admittedly, Ho's music is not for everybody and on the surface appears to be less appealing to the younger generation.

"There is more musicality in older music. It is more melodious and you can relate to the words which are very meaningful."

But Ho feels that the younger generation are enjoying the oldies in some way, with the increasing trend of using excerpts of them in new songs.

"For example, some of the old songs are masked with rap in between and they (the artistes) use it because they realise it is good!"

Conversely, Ho does not relate to new music but there are always exceptions. "Sorry to say a lot of the music today does not suit my taste but once in a while there are good ones. A song like ACHY BREAKY HEART for example, is quite good and I will sing it. There are other songs such as RIGHT HERE WAITING and NO MATTER WHAT but they are few and far between."

Regardless of the songs Ho plays, be it old or new, he will not rest on his laurels. Ho concludes, "I am still learning and music is a constant learning process. The day that you say you are good means that you are stagnant. And it is not only music - it applies to everything else in life as well."

A walk down memory lane with Alfred Ho
Fancy some live music from yesteryear? RUBIN KHOO speaks to the man who’ll
get your feet tapping and your fingers snapping, Alfred Ho.
IT was close to a decade ago that singer Alfred Ho played at the opening
of The Actors Studio’s new premises at Plaza Putra, Dataran Merdeka. Ten
years later with fewer jobs coming his way, the singer who lost his sight
at the age of three decided to give his old friend Faridah Merican a call.
That call led to Down Memory Lane with Alfred Ho, a performance that will
showcase golden oldies.

“The repertoire will basically feature songs that people have grown up
with,” says Ho. “I like taking people back to their childhood.”
During the first show held in mid-October, Ho indulged his fans with
renditions of classics like The Young Ones, Blue Suede Shoes and House of
the Rising Sun. He also displayed his versatility with a couple of Chinese
and Japanese numbers as well. The result was a performance that literally
got the audience on their feet.

“There was a couple that even got on the stage to dance,” he says. But
that has been the trademark of Ho. The self-taught musician, who shot to
fame in the 70s after participating in various talent competitions like
Bakat TV and radio series’ like Take Five, is well known for his
infectious performances.
For his next performance to be held on Oct 31, Ho promises a completely
different set of songs.

“It will definitely be different,” he says. “I don’t have planned
concerts. I just play what comes to mind and there are so many songs in my
head.”
Ho who also sings in Spanish and says he has a wide repertoire that allows
him to vary his performances.

“Every show is different,” Ho says. But fans can expect to hear old
favourites as he believes that oldies are the “most catchy”.
Ho will be performing with two others, Theresa Ng and Amin Shariff
Abdullah. Amin Shariff, who is also blind, studied at Arden College in
Manchester where he received a national diploma in popular music. He will
play the keyboards in this performance. Ng will play the gu zheng giving the show an “east meets west” feel. On Sunday, she will accompany Ho on a couple of numbers while she is also playing one or two solo items. This performance will hopefully lead to many more for Ho.

Recently, Ho has spoken out on the difficulties he has faced in trying to secure gigs. Until 2000, he was a part-time DJ on Radio 4 where he hosted Family
Favourites until he was told that his programme was discontinued.
He is now in the midst of looking for a promotions manager to help boost
his career. While things may be tough, Ho, who is in his 50s, continues to
remain positive.

“I believe in myself,” he says. “I am looking for someone who will promote
me just like a product.”

Ho was the first Malaysian blind man to record an album, earning him a
mention in the Malaysia Book of Records. While studying at the St.Nicholas
School for the blind in Penang, he developed an interest in music and
formed a band called the Sharks.He continued to pursue his musical career after leaving school, performing at pubs and functions while working as a telephone operator for the Penang Municipal Council. In 1983, however, Ho decided to become a full-time musician. He has in recent years tried his hand at other jobs, even massaging for a while but had to give it up due to rheumatism.

In the 1970s, Ho cut two EP vinyl records of his own compositions. He has
also recorded three cover albums, the last of which was entitled Nostalgia
Gold was released in 2001.

Alfred Ho took his mature audience on a pleasurable trip down memory
lane
IT was a rare sight to see the Actors Studio at the Bangsar Shopping
Complex filled with an audience who were above retirement age.

They had come for the Down Memory Lane With Alfred Ho concert last
week.

And they had a good time, singing, clapping and tapping their feet,
with a few brave ones even going on-stage to dance!

This audience came for an evening of evergreens and they found it in
Ho, the talented blind singer and musician whose vigour and energy
would put many younger people to shame.

Indeed, he enjoyed entertaining the audience so much that he didn’t
want to stop!

The show lasted two hours and 40 minutes with an intermission.

From soothing ballads to fast rock numbers and evergreen country
music, Ho – with the help of his rhythm machine – belted out one hit
after another made popular by Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Pat
Boone, Johnny Tillotson, Engelbert Humperdinck and the Platters.

He even covered Cantonese, Japanese and Hokkien numbers.

The crowd was charmed by his deep, resonant voice and his trusty
guitar.

Although Ho could have easily carried the show himself, he roped in
two musician friends to add variety.

In what was what he called the ‘East meets West’ section of the show
when he invited guzheng (Chinese harp) instructor Teresa Ng to duet
with him on a Chinese number, with Ho playing the guitar.

And Ng then proceeded to play a classical Chinese piece that
showcased her dexterity and fluidity on the instrument.

However, it was a little annoying that some in the audience seem
more preoccupied with giving a running commentary on the
proceedings.

The other guest artiste was 20-year-old Amin Shariff Abdullah, a
student from Arden College in Manchester.

The blind young man, a gifted keyboard player, appeared on stage
with dark glasses, looking like a smaller version of Stevie Wonder.

He played some jazz music including a piece which he composed
himself to the audience’s appreciation. But of course, the loudest
applause and cheers were still reserved for Ho, who set the mood
with the bright and sunny Sha-la-la as his opening number.

Then, it was one memorable tune after another.

When he came to songs like Oh! Carol and Save The Last Dance, Ho
urged his friends among the audience to dance. He had purposely left
a big space on stage to serve as the dance floor.

One couple in particular, whom Ho referred to as ‘The Yeohs’, always
took the lead to the dance floor!

Whether it was cha-cha, rock and roll, jive or rhythm (four-step),
they did it with aplomb and won much applause!

Ho also did two medleys which chained together many lively evergreen
hits like Beautiful Sunday, Stand by Me and Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.

Indeed, there seemed to be no songs that Ho couldn’t sing. He
crooned the sentimental Only You, Latin-style La Bamba and even
attempted Chubby Checkers’ The Twist which attracted three couples
to the dancefloor.

For his Chinese numbers, Ho showed his affinity for Sam Hui, singing
a few of the veteran singer’s 1970s hits, and ending with Shanghai
Beach.

Indeed, Ho has quite a fanbase, with some coming from Penang and
Muar, Johor, for the show. Many have probably attended his first
show on Oct 17 as well.

At the end of it, the happy and satisfied faces of the audience said
it all.

The Saturday Nite Live on 12th June pulled in such a big crowd that for the first time ever, some had to be turned away from the Batek Bar. Alfred Ho was no newcomer to the scene and longstanding fans prompltly turned up with full intent to enjoy a night of musical wonder.

Alfred or the "golden-voiced fingersmith" obliged the enthusiastic crowd with an unbeatable repertoire of Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard and Johnny Horton evergreen songs. Inpromptu sing along sessions erupted every now and then and four members-turnback-up dancers completed the show.

It was a night to cherish and more. Alfred Ho surely deserved a toast.

Listening to the talented Alfred is a walk down
memory lane, reviving gems from past that you may
not have even heard on the radio of late. Alfred
has such a wide repertoire that he has been known
to play for four straight hours, with still some
songs to spare.

HISTORY
Struck blind after a bout of measles at the age of
three, Alfred showed a love for music from an
early age.

At Penang's St Nicholas School for the Blind, he
taught himself to play the guitar and formed a
four-piece schoolboy band called The Sharks.

He later honed his craft doing the pub circuit as
a solo guitarist and developed an uncanny sense of
being able to 'read' his audience from the stage.

His first brush with fame came as a semi-finalist
in RTM's Bakat TV, the popular talent show of the
70s.

Alfred also did a few shows called Take Five with
a commercial broadcasting station in that period
and even cut two EP vinyl records of his own
compositions. Two songs, Train To Tennessee and
Wendy's Love Song were particularly popular and he
recorded several cassettes back then that were
played on local airwaves.

In 1984, having garnered a following and dubbed
Malaysia's Jose Feliciano, Alfred finally quit his
steady job as a telephone operator and went into
music fulltime.

A decade of performances later, during which no
record label was willing to sign him on, Alfred
self-produced an album of 22 covers of his
favourite hits called "Special Gems".

Today, his loyal fanbase, from ambassadors to
royalty, from vinyl connoisseurs to lovers of
classic dancing, still speak of Alfred with
fondness and continue to enjoy his special brand
of music.

Alfred Ho has been crooning evergreen favourites to Malaysians for more than 2 decades. His mellow voice has brought him far since his brush with stardom as a semi-finalist in RTM's Bakat TV of the 1970's. "There's nothing I haven't tried," he says. Ho is no daredevil, he is simply a blind singer bent on making it in the punishing entertainment world. Some of the things he has tried include writing to cliff richard and the BBC Outllook programme, looking for breaks. His wife Rufina, not to be outdone, wrote in to TV3's benson & hedges golden dreams without Ho's knowledge, telling the producers about his dream to perform in Las Vegas. Ho says he has come up against a fair amount of prejudice. "I'm not sure if it is because I'm blind or whether they think I am too old." It has been an uphill task for Ho on his journey to promote himself as an entertainer.

After more than 10 years on the pub circuit in Penang, blind singer Alfred Ho has decided to make tracks for the bright lights of the big city.

"This is where the action is and if I'm ever going to make it to the big time, I'll have to be a success here first," Alfred said.

His first shot at fame had been in 1971when he strapped his box guitar across his shoulder and came here to compete against such talents as yodeller Brian Jeremiah and family group The Nettos on Bakat TV.

"My friend Matthew Josef, sent me to RTM with a reference letter and I thought that it was for a regular job", he recollected. "I never even dreamed that he wanted me to take part in the contest."

Unintended or not, Alfred, born in Klian Intan, Perak, reached the semi-finals and RTM subsequently featured him on several of its variety shows over the next three years. The blind singer however, soon had to head for Penang to work as a telephone operator with the municipal council there, while moonlighting at The Barrel, an island pub and other nightspots until 1984. During this time, he found that he had to go on leave frequently to handle some of the short stints which kept cropping up in towns on the mainland.

"So I decided that my singing career deserved my wholehearted attention. Moreover, keeping two jobs was very taxing and left me with almost no time for myself," he said.

Now, although there have been short periods when he has found himself jobless, Alfred has no regrets about his choice of career. Hoping to record his own album one day, he keeps his recording desires fullfilled, albeit temporarily, by recording his favourites, using a karaoke machine and minus one cassettes in the privacy of his room in brickfields. While here - and if he has the chance to - Alfred would like to team up with a female singer "perhaps one who could play the guitar or organ" to work the nightspot circuit with.

Besides his old favourites, especially Cliff Richard, who has greatly influenced his style, elvis presley, beatles, elton john, merle haggard, Alfred also does chinese, malay and spanish numbers.

Then again, there are his own compositions "from the early days" and the constant requests for them would see Alfred doing such songs as Train To Tennessee, Lilian and Wendy's song.

But the need to learn more new commercial songs to keep up with the other requests has been taking up a lot of my time," he said

Dreams have always been the sole inspiration for local blind artiste Alfred Ho, born 45 years ago in Klian Intan, Perak.

Blinded after an attack of measles at the age of 3, Ho received his education at the St Nicholas School for the blind in Penang.

Here he developed an interest in music and taught himself to play the guitar. Later he formed a 4 piece band called The Sharks. Ho's first performed "live" in 1971 at the age of 21 during a radio show called "TAKE FIVE", which was hosted by Patrick Teoh on the Redifusion cable radio. The show sparked off interest among the many who enjoyed his singing talent and Ho was constantly invited to perform at social functions and in pubs.

So in 1983, he made a difficult decision to resign from his 10 year old job as a telephone operator in Penang to completely devote himself to his first love, music. Since then, he has appeared as guest artiste on various local productions.

Ho has recently released his second album entitled LOVE SONGS IN GOLD. The album consists of 20 rare golden love classics which he carefully selected.

A good number of people still remember Alfred Ho who had a big following in the 70s. Many haven't forgotten him.

This can be gauged from the enthusiastic turn-out at the Sungai Wang Plaza concourse during his "live" show to promote his latest album entitled LOVE SONGS IN GOLD. The lack of space encouraged many fans to crowd the balconies of each floor to catch the singer's renditions of oldies and crowd favourites.

He started off with a real crowd pleaser LA BAMBA, which set the pace for more to come. This was then followed by JEREMIAH WAS A BULLFROG and DO YOU WANT TO DANCE. Playing only a guitar and accompanied by a drum-machine, this one-man show is unique by anyone's standards. What was even more unique about it was that Alfred Ho is blind (he has been blind since the age of 3 due to measles). Rather than take his sight impairment as a handicap, Alfred turned to his first love which was music, especially music of the 60s. Why? "I was brought up in that era. The songs then were melodic and full of meaning".

The crowd which gathered to catch this act was diverse to say the least. There were senior citizens, teenagers, executives and I even spotted a cook from one of the restaurants. Some overzealous ones kept going "Woooooooo" at some of the songs. He had some really loud cheers when he sang SWEAT (A LA LA LA LONG). There were girls screaming when he went : "I'll push it, push it some more."

Alfred has a wide repertoire. He sang songs made popular by elvis presley, the beatles and cliff richard. He sang in english, cantonese, mandarin and even gave the audience the original japanese version of SUKIYAKI (the first asian song to dominate the american charts).

I can say this much more Alfred as a singer. He is really, really good. Judging from the way the crowd wanted more, it was evedent that there is a market for his talents. Luck was on my side when I managed to speak to him after his show. According to Alfred, "I always perform solo as I can't afford a group except during recording."

Alfred later added that other than the "live" show that day and the next, there were no other confirmed shows in the near future.

What are his hopes for this album? "I hope it sells well. Radio 4 currently playing some of the songs." LOVE SONGS IN GOLD is actually a follow-up of SPECIAL GEMS which was launched in 1993. His main reasoning for coming up with 2 albums after a long lull since the 70s, is to reach out to his fans and also gain financial self-support. There were a lot of skeptics who believe that oldies don't sell. But the amount of remakes of oldies flooding the market at present should be enough proof that Alfred can make it, given the right marketing. Since Radio 4 is doing it's bit in promoting a local musician, it is now left to the public to decide.

Personally, I was rather impressed by Alfred's singing. He has a really remarkable voice that could put a lot of our local stars to shame. He is also a mean guitar player. Comapred to the awful voices on the tapes that have covered versions of oldies, Alfred's album will come as a breath of fresh air.

You have to give Alfred Ho credit for his guts. The man doesn't give a hoot about being blind or any disadvantage that may come with it. Once he's got his mind made up, there's no stopping him. And if he isn't able to get anyone to help him achieve what he wants, he'll just go ahead and do it himself.

The 47 year old singer has been in the business for more than 20 years, having begun with the 1971 Bakat TV competition. And for a long, long time, he had been wanting to record his own albums but luck just wasn't on his side. None of the recording companies were too keen on giving him much hope in this aspect of his career.

So in 1993, pretty fed up with the negative responses he was getting, Alfred went ahead and did it himself, playing all the instruments and singing the songs too and voila, there it was - his first album "Special Gems", which sold more than 600 units on CD and 2,000 on cassette.

This wouldn't be a terribly impressive sales figure; until you discover that he did the marketing and distribution himself, too. "As far as I am concerned, it is my own product and I have no qualms peddling them at my shows and concerts."

The response then was good enough to justify another musical venture and this time he called it LOVE SONGS IN GOLD. And the response to this? - "Well about the same, really, because I was still doing the distribution myself." Both special gems and love songs in gold were also financed entirely by Alfred. But like they say, if you really believe in something and slog at it, something is bound to come through. Yes, even fate relents to the persistent peddler and eventually something did come through.

Now we're into October 1996 and Alfred Ho has just released a new album entitled NOSTALGIC COUNTRY & EVERGREEN FAVOURITES, which comprises 16 songs sold at budget price. This time around there is a big difference. Alfred finally found someone to finance the production and release the album; a local recording company called Kingstar Enterprise, which will also be responsible for marketing and distributing the album. The songs are rare and difficult to find in the market; but as the title suggests, "they are all timeless pieces," says Alfred.

The songs in the compilation include "MY SHOES KEEP WALKING BACK TO YOU, BUTTERFLY, LITTLE DUTCH GIRL, GREAT BIG WORLD, THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE, TEN THOUSAND MILES, SIXTEEN CUBES OF SUGAR and I WILL LOVE YOU ALL MY LIFE."

Having heard all his recording efforts on the three albums, one thing is certain, Alfred Ho has improved by leaps and bounds. His earlier efforts has presented the singer as one who did cover versions in the same vocal style as the originals. But on this album, Alfred has come a long way, with his own guitar-picking style and a voice all his own, regardless of the songs he covers.

Alfred hosts a sunday morning show on time highway radio (8am) on which he also spins songs from his own albums. Besides this, he can often be found making guest appearances at various nightspots in and around the city; like the little-publicised gig at Radio City in 1 utama (Bandar Utama, KL) late last month. The event had been publicised by word-of-mouth and several of his fans turned up from far and near to be entertained.

The response he received was impressive, to put it mildly, and even the management was surprised at his popularity, especially when he belted out the old favourites, using several self-arranged medleys, only stopping between segments to make special dedications and introduce his songs.

"We were only planning to have him here just this once to help promote his album but with this kind of response, maybe we'll have him more often" said owner Patrick Teoh.
